Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), comprising coronary heart (CHD) and cerebro-vascular diseases, are currently the leading cause of death globally, accounting for 21.9% of total deaths, and are projected to increase to 26.3% by 2030. The driving influence behind the epidemic of heart disease are seen gradually escalating with co-risk factors like smoking, dyslipidaemia, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Hypertension seeps in because of lack of the infrastructure to support healthy lifestyles, like safe places to walk and exercise. People consume excess sodium (salt) and less potassium (fruits and vegetables). The risk of developing high blood pressure increases while being obese, as one gets older and also when one has a family history.  Alcohol drinking and smoking are factors that can aggravate the risk to health.

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism, it develops when the body doesn’t make enough insulin or is not able to use insulin effectively, or both.Over time, high blood glucose damages nerves and blood vessels, leading to complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, dental disease, and amputations.

Hypertension and Diabetes are lifestyle diseases. Leading a regulative life with prescribed eating and sleeping habits, diet and exercise, and quitting harmful habits will improve the health and thus bestow a hope of living a quality life in old age.
